Large company CEOs certainly think so. The World Business Council on Sustainable Development, (a CEO-led, global association of ~ 200 companies) not only believes that climate change will affect business, but that businesses need to move beyond wondering what governments will do about it, and consider how to adapt.
“Climate change impacts will create business risks and opportunities within a company’s operations and supply chains, a company’s local community, and in the global consumer market in both developed and developing countries.”
Many companies have decided that the best defense is a good offense, and have jumped onto the green marketing bandwagon. But this isn’t what the WBCSD is talking about. Rather, they are suggesting that many of the basic inputs for businesses will be harder to come by, more expensive, and more susceptible to shipping disruptions, particularly if they come from afar.
Strategies for adaptation will need to include substitute inputs; local suppliers; greater efficiency in use of materials and energy; and greater self-sufficiency.
